Ecuador

World Horizons travelers will volunteer in small village schools, high in the Andes Mountains surrounding the town of Cayambe. These schools serve native Ecuadorian villages and lack many, if not all, the basic amenities.

Cayambe, located about 64km north of the capital, Quito, is considered Ecuador’s flower capital. As you approach Cayambe, the snow-dusted peak of Mount Cayambe, the third-highest peak in Ecuador, rises over the rolling farmland and the swatches of color and enormous white greenhouses which set the backdrop coming into town. Local homemade cheese and bizcochos (salt crackers) are also produced here. Archaeological sites dating back to 1300 BC have been discovered in Cayambe’s outskirts. Enjoy breathtaking views while making a huge difference in the lives of the beautiful children. You will be bringing textbooks and educational material to give to the children and will help with day to day activities at the school. Participants may also repair leaky roofs and other small repair projects. Individual internships may also be arranged for each student a couple times each week. The individual internships allow the students to become more involved with the local community as well as improve their conversational Spanish abilities.

WHI students will have the chance at the end of the day and on weekends to experience many cultural sites as well as visit the famous craft fair on Saturday in Otavalo. Otavalo has been an Andean crossroads since pre-Inca times. The population of Otavalo is a mixture of people of European descent and the indigenas (indigenous people). The indigenas primarily dress in traditional attire and live in the nearby villages.

"...Johanna had a terrific time on her trip and we are so proud of her, interacting with people in another language, sharing a house with strangers who quickly became friends, trying new foods, etc. She found it scary and exciting and definitely learned a lot about herself on this trip. She is more confident in her interactions with people she doesn't know and she really enjoyed getting to know the other students on the trip. They communicate on a regular basis have formed lifelong friends..." -- Allison, Michigan
